Augmented reality material powered by Unity – game engine, ipad, lasered acrylic, lasered, stained and varnished plywood, welded, sanded and painted steel, 2024

Four seasons is a five-part, augmented reality installation, created as part of the Phototaxis art project funded by the Kone Foundation 2022-2024. The installation consists of five plywood stands with carved steel legs, four framed iPad pro tablets and augmented reality material loaded onto them. There is also video versions of the 3D sculptures, which differ slightly in their implementation from the augmented reality versions.

Each stand has its own augmented reality work attached to it, a fountain-like 3D sculpture that can be viewed on a tablet. The augmented reality material, which runs on the Unity game engine, appears on the tablet when the program recognizes the image engraved on the stand. All five AR works are in the same program, so you can move between the works without changing tablets.

The work deals with cyclical change, which is reflected in nature, the human psyche and the continuum of historical, collective changes.

The central sculpture, Center stand, acts as a center, around which four other works are placed in the directions of the equinoxes and solstices of the sun, like in old stone circles. The work acts as a yearly clock, where the structure of the ancient stone circle meets new digital technology. It creates a space where it is possible to look both into the past and into the future. The liquid element of the works flows and reacts to the tilt of the stand, so it is also possible to interact with the AR material in real time.

The four outer stands of the work represent different seasons and four main stages of the alchemical process of change. Spring represents birth and possibility, summer flowering and fulfillment, autumn decomposition and release, winter silence and a time of rebirth. From an alchemical perspective, these stages symbolize the transformative process: subsidence, purification, clarification and integration.

In the work, the sun symbolizes natural rhythms and the psychic center of consciousness, a fixed point around which both psychological and cosmic harmony and order are built. The work also reflects the imbalance of the anthropocene: the conflict between artificial light and natural rhythms reflects a disconnection from the cycle of nature and the loss of the inner center. The 3D sculptures combine the symbolism of various myths about the solar cycle and rebirth, as well as light-sensitive organisms and plants studied in recent light pollution research.
